LUNAR BLANKET CAL- Week 3- Moon Phases

Here we are another week and the last one! I know I said 4 weeks, but I was one week late (for personal reasons) and decided to bring you the 3 moon phases at once 🙂

This was one of my favourite parts when I was crocheting the blanket…. The moon is a great inspiration for me. Everything about it moves me, touches me and influences me 🙂

So let’s create!

Para esta última parte, necesitarás:

  • 1 LUNA LLENA
  • 2 MEDIAS LUNAS
  • 2 LUNAS CRECIENTES

For this last part, you will need:

  • 1 FULL MOON
    2 HALF MOONS
    2 GROWING MOONS

BLOQUEO- BLOCKING

Blocking is a fundamental part of this proyect, as this will give you the possibility to leave the grannies with neat ends and will help you to define them better. I am often asked if it is better to block after joining the blanket or before joining it. I block the grannies before, as this helps me to define each one and the space taken up for this is less. Personally I use the mist blocking technique and they look great (I don’t completely submerge the grannies in water).

UNIÓN / TO JOIN

The joining of grannies is a world full of techniques and possibilities, a subject we could go into in more detail later on.
You can join them with any method you like. It can be with a wool needle or with your own crochet hook, the important thing is to have a finished work, isn’t it?
The way I joined the grannies was very simple: I lined up all the grannies, and with a crochet hook I took BACK LOOP ONLY of each stitch and passed the yarn through, taking a stitch from one grannie and taking the one that is exactly in front, in the other grannie, like a mirror.

Well, so much for our CAL, I hope that if you workted this great project (which needs a lot of patience by the way), you’ve learned a lot of new things and you’ve liked this design, on the other hand if you didn’t manage to work it this time; this tutorial will be here forever so you can crochet it another time maybe and the moon will be with you, protect you and guide you in the blanket. See you in another post!

**Remember that this design has NOT been tested, so if you find any mistakes, let me know right away 🙂

LUNAR BLANKET CAL- Week 2: SKY

Hola Anandinis!

Hello Anandinis!
We are once again in week 2 of our CAL. I hope that many of you already have a lot of stars made. Remember that to see the tutorial, pattern and chart of week 1 you can go here LUNAR BLANKET WEEK 1.

This week we will be looking at the grannies in the sky, which are blue (in my project) . It does not have a big design that stands out but it do have these white «spots» that symbolise stars much further away. I wanted to mention this as many people wrote to me asking if this should stay like this or if they were making some kind of mistake… and no, you guys are doing great!

In the diagram above, the sky grannies are represented by the blank, unpatterned squares. The sky grannies needed are 49, but you know this is only a guide and you can put together your own design combination using any number you like.

let's start!

LUNAR BLANKET CAL- Week 1 : STAR

We are starting a new CAL, a special one for the end of the year festivities, Christmas is coming and this could be that long awaited special gift that will make you look like a queen or a king, who knows.

We will be 4 weeks crocheting this beautiful blanket inspired by the phases of the moon. Each week I will bring you a part of the blanket for you to work. So, let’s get started!

Juega!

As you can see, the blanket is made with 72 grannies squares, of which 23 are star motifs. However, you can work as many as you like and make your own star convination. With the measurements it’s the same, this blanket was made with a DK weight, but you can make it perfectly in a sport weight and add a few more grannies… actually you can make it any size you want! imagine! the bigger you get, the more you can even add your own zodiac sign cosntelation 🙂

ANANDA COLLAR- TUTORIAL

ANANDA COLLAR

Hola Anandinis!

Hello Anandinis!
Today I bring you a fun and easy to make necklace tutorial. As you know, I always like to make accessories that use very little material and with which you can use leftovers from big crochet projects.

I have always liked to crochet «jewellery». If you have been following me for a while you know that I have a couple of crochet jewellery tutorials on my Youtube channel.
Jewellery has been part of human history since the beginning. In some cultures it is believed that wearing a necklace unconsciously attracts the «Divine Consciousness», which is in turn transmitted through the whole body. This «consciousness» would protect us from negative energy. This is also why there is a belief that there are pendants that bring luck or bring a certain protection to the person. Not to mention that the necklace goes on the neck area, the physical place where sound is produced and where we communicate.

¡soy tejedora y me hago mis propias joyas»!

I was reading about prehistoric man discovered different materials in his environment, which he modified by turning them into ornaments that allowed him to symbolise himself within his social group. Today modern society still makes use of such ornaments, using them as emblems, as badges or as signs of power and hierarchy, or even as simple ornaments. In this sense, wearing crochet necklaces I think says to the world: «Hey, I’m a crocheter and I make my own jewellery»!

-10 gr Color 1
-10 gr Color 2
-8 cuentas

Then, there is nothing better than wearing your own crocheted necklace. You can also give it as a gift to someone special.
What will you need?
-10 gr Colour 1
-10 gr Colour 2
-8 beads

The step by step is in the video tutorial that I prepared with much love and that you can see at the end of this post.
CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE CROCHETING
I made two samples: 1 pink with purple which I worked with a sport weight and another one lemon green with purple (which is the one you will see in the video) which I worked with a fingering weight.

As you can see in the photo, although the pink necklace was made with a larger weight, the necklace is smaller. This is because I used a slightly smaller crochet hook than the one recommended for this weight, and consequently, the project was tighter. On the contrary, the lime green one , which was crocheted with a smaller weigth, is bigger and longer, this was because I used a bigger crochet hook than the recommended one for this weight. I wanted to do these tests to see the difference between one and the other. Knowing this, you can choose the one you like the most.

Overlay CUP COVER

Hola nuevamente querida comunidad!

Hello again dear community! I’m back once again with an entertaining, lovely and quick tutorial with one of the techniques I love: Overlay crochet. But, in a flat way.

Those who follow me since my very beginnings on instagram will know that this was a free design that I launched about 3 years ago.

There are so many things I remember from this, for example that it was my first ever written pattern (long before writing an official paid pattern), I was facing what would become the first steps of my work: How to write a pattern… phew!…. it was quite an odyssey to start writing a pattern (and a badly written one, by the way). I remember I spent days writing it because I didn’t know where to start, how to explain some things that were difficult to see if they weren’t with pictures, etc. After a few days of writing it, I lost all progress because my computer crashed. I cried, I really did. I felt that all my work had gone down the drain. It’s almost tragicomic, because now I think about it and writing such a short pattern would be super easy (compared to the length of some of the larger designs). It makes me think about the beauty of the development and self-management that we crocheters and knitters go through. That desire for self-improvement is what makes us advance and become «experts» more and more.

I finally finished it, saved it on google drive and very few people had access to it and it was forgotten about 🙁
and all my samples were left at home, decorating my mugs and flower pots.

A few days ago I found some of these cup covers and I thought: I should publish this one, but now properly! hehehehe and I got to work. As you can see, I’ve modified a bit the design of the original and added «chubby» stitches (I think it looks even more adorable). But it still has the same essence.

The materials? Well, I loved the materials, I used 100% cotton. Now, you can use any fibre of any weight, you just have to calculate that the stitches to be worked will be multiplo of 4+11 and with that look for a size according to your own cup and material.

As for the pattern, I didn’t want to write again or take pictures of the process, I preferred to make a little video where you could see the stitch by stitch. I make them without speaking because I wouldn’t have the time to make a video in Spanish and another one in English. Besides, I believe that with kinesic communication we can develop our understanding and comprehension of the processes <3 . You will find some abbreviations written in the video, in case you don’t know what they are I’m going to leave them below. You can always slow down the video if you think it’s going too fast.

MOSAICO CROCHET AND AKASH BEANIE

Hola otra vez querida comunidad!

Hello again dear community!

Today I want to talk to you about crochet mosaic. It is such a beautiful technique, which can be so easy and so complex. A diverse technique that opens up many possibilities for creation. It is a dynamic technique and, in my opinion, it is changing more and more and we find new variations.

Often, many people who know this technique for the first time ask me if it is the same as tapestry… and no! they are very different techniques. In tapestry you will work with the threads inside the stitches mainly, with all the colours at the same time. In mosaic we will work in rounds or rows with each colour separately. They may look very similar with the shapes that can be created… but they really aren’t and the truth is, I prefer mosaic a thousand times (if I’m honest, I don’t get on very well with tapestry, but keep it a secret, hahahahaha).

Now, did you know that there is not one, but a few types of crochet Mosaic?

Crazy, isn’t it, but true. One of the best things about human beings is their ability to mutate, transform and affect their environment for the better. With «handicrafts» is no exception. We can develop as many techniques as we can with love and dedication? And well, I want to tell you about some of the ones I know, this is a perception from my experience.

1. MOSAICO

Qué fácil no?

We could say that this type of mosaic is the «traditional» one, it was one of the first ones I knew, it is actually quite old but only a couple of years ago it has become more popular on social networks. You will work each two rows with the same colour. With one colour you will work one row by right side and the other one by wrong side; with the other colour you will do the same. It work single, double crochet and chain stitch… nothing else. It’s easy, isn’t it? The difficulty is rather to calculate where you put the doubles stitches to form the geometric shapes. It’s a bit mathematical at the beginning, but when you get the «thread», you fly with the mosaic and you don’t let go!

Now, it’s usually worked with rows usually in a flat fabric, very rarely seen in a circular way… and that’s precisely what we’ll learn with this beanie! Another way to work it is with increases, then it gets a little bit more difficult, but it’s not impossible as shown in the sweater Julio.

2. OVERLAY MOSAIC

It is one of the modern types of mosaic and one of the most commonly crocheted as well. It is a bit different from the traditional one… In this type of mosaic you only work one round per colour, and it is often used for circular crocheting where you join each round with a slip stitch. Here you no longer crochet by wrong and right side of the fabric. It is only by the right side. The stitches used are single crochet stitches hooked only on the back loop and double crochet stitches hooked on the front loop, where will they be hooked? That depends on the design.

This kind of mosaic gives to you much more possiblities to make more designs than the tradicional one

Of course, you could also find this kind of mosaic in a flat fabric, but you would have to cut the yarn every time you finish a row.

I don’t know if this type of mosaic has a specific name or not. But from what I have seen, it is quite new and has been largely developed by this talented woman: Tinna. She is a master in Mosaic! (and one of my favourite inspirational designers). You can find more of her work on her Instagram account.

This type of mosaic is similar to the previous one. The difference is that you hide the colour with which the figure is drawn, crocheting with the colour that is drawn only in the back strands of the fabric, while the background colour is worked only in the front strands of the fabric, leaving space for the front strands so that the background colour hides the colour of the drawing… got it? Jjaja well if you didn’t get it right I leave you this great free tutorial from Tinna with this kind of variant, so you can understand it better.

It’s a wonder isn’t it? Find it HERE and crochet as many as you want!

As you can see, we have a world of possibilities of colours, shapes and garments with just one technique. From here imagination is our only limit…. And well, let’s get on with it!

CLASE COLECTIVA GORRO AKASH

COLLECTIVE CLASS AKASH BEANIE

Why Akash?  Akash means ether: a very fine substance that bathes the whole universe. Akash is an all-embracing, high vibrational energy. Every thought, every movement, every vibration that is generated is recorded in the Akash. It is not a place, it is a frequency of vibration, AND it is represented along the cap in a geometric figure with this mini windmill (which looks like it is spinning), and represents the movement of energy in the universe. It’s not a pattern that I invented, I just transformed a pattern from the knitting mosaic and adapted it for crochet. The class was made last year by instagram live, so it was in spanish but you can be guided by chart or directions stitch by stitch

¿Qué necesitarás para esta clase colectiva? / What will you need to crochet it?

  1. 50 grs de COLOR 1
  2. 50 grs de COLOR 2

  • 50 g of COLOUR 1
  • 50 grams of COLOUR 2
  • Crochet hook according to your own tension.

In this sense we won’t use a gauge swatch and I won’t ask you to use a specific weight, you just have to work with what you have, and you can adapt the design to the size of your own head.

And finally, you will need to have the following chart to show you the main functions of the mosaic crochet in rounds, and in the video I show you how to join for the wrong and right side of the fabric.

Sweater ANDES

We meet once again dear crochet community! I’m very happy to be able to tell you the inspiration and the process of this design that I love so much, and it is inspired by nothing more and nothing less than the majestic Andes mountain range that runs through almost all of South America, isn’t it wonderful?

A mountain range that has kept the secrets of many of our native peoples in Latin America, one that holds cultural, spiritual and geographical wealth. Passing through many places of our continent; an imposing one that protects and shelters us; one that was a strategic ally for our native people in the colonization that made some of them not yet extinct. One that is a daily inspiration for thousands of people who live in its vicinity.

The richness of the Andes mountain range is truly impressive. This mountain range has seen the born, growth and death of many customs, much knowledge directly linked to our community… such as animal care, shearing, spinning, natural dyeing, weaving, knitting and crocheting with different tools. A real treasure of the planet.

SWEATER ANDES

(hecha a volar tu imaginacion!)

In this design you can find the shape of the mountains around the yoke, trees… and well, there is a «hidden» design, have you imagined what it would be? (let your imagination run wild! and tell me what do you imagine on comments)
I am very proud to be Latin American and to have these roots.

But if you ask yourself, what are you going to find in this design, is it easy, is it difficult? Well, I’ve always had a hard time answering that question, I think the difficulty of things is in our will, and with that plus love… anything is possible! anything is possible! My testers rated it from easy to difficult…. so? hahaha … I’ll tell you the details of this design for you to decide how you will rate it.

The first thing you will find is short rows. Although many people think it’s difficult, but it’s not that difficult. The unknown is always a bit more laborious, but once you’ve tried it… there’s no turning back and well, I decided some time ago that I’d like to add more professionalism to my designs so that people can see that crocheting can be as professional as knitting. But don’t worry, in the pattern you’ll find step by step instructions and if you don’t understand, there are also specific charts for each size!

Has oído hablar de él?

If you’ve already managed the short rows, the next challenge is waiting for you! The yoke is made entirely of mosaic crochet overlay…. wait… what?! Have you heard of it? If not, don’t worry, the pattern explains it stitch by stitch, and I’ve obviously added achart… So it’ll be great if you already know how to read crochet charts!

The overlay mosaic crochet is another kind of mosaic… (new crochet techniques are appearing every day and I love it). This type of mosaic works only one colour per round and always on the right side of the fabric, unlike the «normal» mosaic (I don’t know what it’s actually called) where you work two rounds with each colour and turn the fabric by wrong and right side in each round.

Y bueno, cuéntame si te animas a tejerlo!

The material… Any DK thickness fibre will be great to work with, and please… don’t forget to make the swatch gauge. Sure, if you do it, it will take you a bit longer, but you will save yourself some mistakes in measurements or that it is too small somewhere and you have to take it all apart and then, at that moment, start making the sample… can you imagine? noo what a mess! Remember that the sample is our best friend. This design comes in 10 sizes, you can choose the one that suits you best, from a bust of 75 cm to 148 cm. If you want to know how much material you will need, you can go to the shop and read the description of the design.

And well, let me know if you dare to crochet it! and.. have you already thought what hidden design is there? if you already know it, write it in the comments and if you get it right, you’ll surely get a surprise!

Aim Shawl, a shawl of meditation

A magical winter day on this side of the world and today I bring you a design that I had pending for many months! To be honest, I have a lot of designs that I still can’t translate, others that I started and never finished them and others that I finished crocheting but never wrote the pattern hahahahaha the crocheter’s disease is also contagious (Oops!). These coming months I hope to catch up with all those patterns that have not yet seen the light of day on my website or Ravelry, since they are designs that I have crocheted for magazines and the rights to them have recently returned to me.  That’s the case of the pattern I’m presenting you today: Aim shawl, designed last year for Inside Crochet magazine.

Today, besides telling you the inspiration for this design, I want to tell you a little bit about the world that surrounds me every time I crochet.

As I have already told you, this design is inspired by Saraswati, goddess of knowledge , wisdom and arts, and «Aim» is a mantra chanted in her honour. Saraswati’s energy is invoked when we seek answers through inspiration, to discern truth from confusion. She helps us to find, within the wisdom that already exists in our subconscious, the spontaneity of the right words to resolve situations that require intellectual tools and mental agility.

Crocheting for me has always been related to my beliefs and my way of seeing the world. Crocheting is intimately related to my sadhana, I try to bring Yoga into every space of my life, as much as possible and as much as my mind allows me. In Yoga there is a practice called Japa Yoga, which consists of meditation using Japa Mala, which is a type of meditation «necklace» made of 108 beads, where you repeat a mantra on each bead.

And in this sense, I like to see crocheting as a kind of Japa Yoga, where each stitch or row you work is a mantra. Each stitch keeps you focused, keeps your mind calm and attentive in the present. I am one of those who prefer to crochet in silence and concentration (miau).

This is what I mainly wanted to represent in this fabric, I wanted it to be like a mantra for you, I wanted it to be your companion in stressful situations, in situations where you just want to stay attentive and calm. Since its construction is repetitive and not at all changeable, it will accompany you amicably.

¿Qué encontrarás en el patrón?/ what will you fin in the pattern?

You will find a design that has no difficult stitches, only classic stitches and a repeating pattern that you will learn after a few minutes of crocheting.
You will find stitch-by-stitch instructions and diagrams to help you if you are more comfortable with this option.
As for the thickness, a DK thickness is recommended, but as this is not a garment with several sizes, you can crochet it with the thickness that suits you best, but remembering that the thicker the material, the bigger it will be and the thinner the material, the smaller your shawl will be. I recommend you to work it in a solid color, without color shades so that the texture of this design is enhanced 🙂

I just want to tell you that I hope you enjoy crocheting this shawl as much as I enjoyed creating it. I leave you a beautiful interpretation of the Saraswati Mantra in case you are interested in hearing it as you working any project.

Chubby stitches and all you need to know about them

Hello crocheters! after a long time without posting anything, I come back with a friendly post that every crocheter should know!

I call them the chubby stitches and they are all those little stuffed stitches like popcorn, pineapple, bobbles, cluster, puff, garbanzo, palomita, frijol… uff! by how many more and by an endless number of names do we know them….
Specifically, the Spanish speaking world is so rich in cultures and customs, that we can see these richnesses translated in our ways of expressing ourselves, in each region and territory we can find several names for the same point in Spanish, and that can sometimes be a little confusing.

Personally I like to use these stitches in my projects, especially lace and overlay crochet. They allow me to play with textures, they can be representative stitches of many things in nature and I love that. And well, today I will show you some of the stitches I know, by the names I know them by and I will also give you some tips for their make. So, if you are new to crochet or struggle with this kind of stitches, keep reading.

POPCORN STITCH/ PUNTO POPCORN o PALOMITA

HOW TO MAKE IT: Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch. Insert your hook from back to front under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group. Yarn over and pull it throught the first dc, and pull it through loop on your hook

ANOTHER WAY TO MAKE IT: Work 5 double crochet (dc) stitches in the same stitch.
Drop the loop from your hook. Insert your hook from front to back under the top 2 loops of the first double crochet of the group. Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch.

The popcorn stitch (abbreviated pop or pc). You can work popcorn stitches so that they “pop” to the front or the back of the fabric, depending on where you want them to stand out.

HOW TO MAKE IT: Yarn over (yo), insert the hook in the stitch, yarn over, draw the yarn through the stitch, yarn over, and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook.
One half-closed double crochet is complete, and 2 loops remain on the hook. In the same base stitch, repeat the preceding step four more times. You should have 6 loops on your hook.Yarn over and draw the yarn through all 6 loops on the hook.
One 5-double-crochet bobble stitch is complete.

To crochet a bobble stitch, you half-close several stitches worked in the same stitch and then join them together to finish the stitch. Try your hand at making a 3, 4 or 5-double-crochet bobble stitch.

TO CONSIDER/ CONSIDERACIONES

  1. Both stitches are a well-rounded, compact oval protruding from the fabric. They take a little longer to make than other relief stitches, but are well worth the effort.
When I was just starting out in my crocheting life, I often got frustrated because I intended to create big stitches but these stitches never «stuck out» enough…
Well, these 2 stitches have a small detail to consider if you want to adhere a better texture to your project:  You should always work the «chubby» stitches with a stitch a little bigger than the base stitch, i.e. if you are crocheting your fabric in single crochet stitch, your popcorn or bobble stitch should be worked in double crochet stitch. If you are crocheting your fabric in double crochet stitch, your popcorn or bobble stitch should be in treble crochet stitch, and so on…
  2. A very common problem when we’re crocheting bobbles stitches in this case, is the top finished stitch being too loose. Specially the top loop of the first sistch that you made. One of the best things about bobbles is the crisp oval shape with great stitch texture in the middle. But they’re not being able to close the bobble tightly at the top and then when we’re working the next row and you have to crochet over this stitch, sometimes it left a hole very ugly. If you have crocheted a bobble you know what I mean. To avoid this try to use a hook that does not widen at the shaft. But sometimes even with a hook with a flat shaft, your loop will grow when you manipulate the hook to pick up loops and work them off the hook. So pay special attention to this loop and try to keep it tight.
  3. These stitches are generally worked on the right side of the fabric, although you can also work them from both sides by pushing the stitches to the side where you want them to show.

PUFF STITCH/ PUNTO PUFF o BOBO

HOW TO MAKE IT: From the last stitch made, yarn over, insert hook in next st, *yarn over, insert your hook through the same stitch, yarn over, and then draw up another loop, rep* 3 more times, you shlud have 11 loop on the hook, yarn over and draw the yarn through all loops on your hook. Finally with the loop pulled through the puff stitch, make a single chain. This secures the puff stitch, keeps the stitch more upright, and creates the space to work into on the next row.

HOW TO MAKE IT: This stitch is worked in exactly the same way as the puff stitch we have just seen, the only difference being that it is worked around the last double crochet stitch made.

This way of working creates the stitch with a horizontal view as opposed to the previous stitch which leaves a vertical view of the stitches.

TO CONSIDER/ CONSIDERACIONES

  1. These last two stitches, unlike the first two, do not need to be worked higher than the base stitch, as the essence of these stitches is to be worked with double crochet stitches.
  2. Do you want your puff stitches to be a little higher or a little smaller? Move the hook away from or closer to the work as you pull up all the loops. This makes the stitch looser if you move it away, giving it more height; and makes it tighter and smaller if you move it closer.
  3. If you want, you can work these stitches from the wrong side of the work. This means that the stitches will move away from you and can be seen on both sides of your fabric, depending on your point of view.

OVERVIEW/ GENERALIDADES

One of the amazing things about crochet is just how many stitches there are, its versatility, dinamic and vast world. Of course, this can make it tricky to identify stitches sometimes. One of the most common crossovers is between the puff stitch, bobble stitch and popcorn stitch. All designed to create a raised, bump on the fabric, these stitches are fun, attractive and all a little difficult to tell apart!

So remember that not all puff – pop – bobble stitches are the same, sometimes there are disputesamong crocheters about who has the right name hahaha but I think more important than the name, is how they are made so pay attention to the instructions of any pattern you are using to make sure these instructions are part of the variation you are working on or if you are writing a pattern, make sure you write down in detail how the stitch is made.

So let me know what you thought of this post, if you knew these stitches or by how many other names you knew them by. Thanks for reading, Yess.

BACK PART

In this part you can use the leftovers of the two colors of the front and use the other extra ball, the order can be whatever you want!
IMPORTANT: As they are two different parts, in different stitches; the number of rounds of this back part may vary a little bit compared to the front part, that is, depending on the weigth of your yarn this part of the fabric will probably have less rounds. You can compare the height with the front part as you crochet and stop crocheting when the height are similar, the important thing at this stage is that the fabric has 192 stitches, so that you can join them later.

Setup: magic ring. Crocheting always on RS

PARA TERMINAR/ TO FINISH

Corta.

Once finished, join both parts with single crochet stitches. Before finishing the join, fill it with what you have available and close it completely. Fasten off.
